I have gotten a lot better at choosing to look in the distance at the smallest point I can see. Usually when I do this my vision clears. I have found though when I get this clear flash, or any clear flash it never sticks, I blink or look somewhere else and it goes away. I know that with the changing habits this should improve over time and have more frequent flashes.

I have also begun reading slower and more carefully. I have always been a fast reader and I believe its because of this reading style of mine my vision is bad. I read chunks of words and sections of paragraphs in a second. No wonder I cannot focus far away. I am so used to the big picture. Now I am trying to read letter by letter word by word. its slower and as I get used to it I do see improvement visually as well as my speed of reading, which is now about that of a five year old.

Something happened this morning that has happened before and I was curious if anyone else has experienced this. I wake up with strained sore eyes? First, how does that even happen? Second, what on earth can I do to let my eyes relax when I sleep? it took me all day to get them relaxed again.]]>

I came across Bates method in 2008, and did some palming until 2010. Then i resolved to not wearing glasses, including for computer use, unless it's absolutely necessary in a classroom.

In 2009, my prescription was 4.5 in each eyes.

I just had another vision exam a few weeks ago, my left eye is still 4.5 but my right eye is down to 3.5. I had thought that after all these years, I'd be in the 2 to 3 range. Huh

Well my primary goal is to decide whether to purchase anti reflective coating. It costs $50 more, which is ok. I just don't want a glass that's "specifically for computers". I have a feeling that would be providing too much external accommodation, like the way a full power lenses do.

I want normal eyes, not "computer eyes", and I am afraid that wearing a computer glasses will benefit vision clarity at the cost of changing how I see intrinsically. (like how people's brain adapts from reading a printed book to reading on Kindle) If that makes any sense.

But that's just an intuitive guess. Please post your suggestion. Thanks!]]>

I just stumbled over Todd Becker's fabolous youtube-talk about myopia and how to reverse it. That's why I joined here. I have a long, long story to tell with many different aspects and challenges, therefore I'll keep it short and somewhat structured.

I. My background

28 year old german male
got my first glasses with about six years old (don't know the diopters then, maybe -1.5 ?), progressed over the years to the current myopia of almost -12.0 on both eyes, the right glass is a little bit stronger. Although I haven't had my eyes examined for several years know, my estimate would be that I needed about -11.0 (left) and -11.5 (right) to be at 20/20 vision. BTW: 20/20 vision doesn't exist for me anymore not even in my memory. No combination of glasses and/or contact lenses could correct me 100% anymore. And even if ... after a very little time the whole process starts again - slight blur, stronger blur, new glasses, repeat. Been there, done that.
I'm a stutterer since early childhood (maybe that could be an underlying cause for my bad vision) and I suffer from other symptoms and problems such as porn addiction and a slight rounded and hollow back. Needless to say, I have a certain amount of depression, social anxiety, problems to make decisions and to "get my shit together"
I have a university degree and work on the computer for at least 8h each day (I have weaker prescription for the work on the computer)

II. My experience and success so far

discovered vision training a couple of years ago, got some books and began to practice, but I always felt something was lacking. And that something was a structured plan with clear behavioural guidelines. Good vision habits, a few exercises here and there and a "morning workout" and "evening workout" all fine and necessary but the key questions for me have always been: (1) how to progress objectively and reliable (2) how to deal with the existing dependency on glasses and especially contact lenses ?
My exercises and methods in a nutshell: palming, focusing exercises, swings, mediation, eye rolls, certain stretching and bioenergetic exercises, cold/hot water therapy, outlining objects with my nose/looking at details, blinking exercises, not wearing glasses/contacts whenever I can, intermittent fasting, ice cold showers, looking into the distance often, certain "superfoods" etc.
My success so far:

Many flashes of (dramatically) improved vision. Granted, not 20/20 but very encouraging nonetheless. Unfortunately the clear/er flashes only last a couple of moments, usually till the next blink and they improved just a bit over the last months and year.
Anyway: flashes of improved vision are as common for me nowadays as is breathing IF I stick to the exercises and good vision habits and that alone is motivation enough. And get this: with my amount of myopia I'm not supposed to see road signs or small details or car brands or leaves on trees or to read without glasses/contacts an arm-length away from me but I do all these things because I worked up to a level that I CAN see all that. And I'm sure that this is not the end but just the beginning. I'll never give up ! Ever.

Vision hasn't worsened dramatically in years, despite a stressful job and long hours on the computer. Remember: my vision got worse nearly every year by at least 0.5.

Astigmatism seemed to be gone at the last eye examination

III. My questions/concerns

I'd like to incorporate more print pushing into my daily programm(s). I can read without glasses and contact lenses but I have to held the book very close, depending on the weather (a bright sunny day is always best, of course, as everything is well lit). Sometimes I have to held the book so close in front of me that I start to cross eye but that's rather an exception. Not so exceptional is that I have the impression that one eye does more of the work, as I'm so close to the book.
As I wrote above, I can read an arm-length away if I'm in good shape, have a well lit room and maybe a good flash. But I understand that for print pushing you've to be in the "just ge
tting blurry" range.
Mr. Becker says in his video, that you should do two to four hours of print pushing every day. Well, I tried it a couple of times in the last week for about five to ten minutes and I hadn't the impression that it really helped that much. On the contrary, I'm worrying that the excess fosus on a very short distance might even worsen my condition, especially if I'm doing it for two to four hours each day.
As a matter of fact, in my current situation I can't really do two to four hours print pushing each day. Maybe if I would reduce my vision training and all the other methods just to print pushing but I don't think that would be a good solution. So I have to find a way to INCORPORATE it into my normal activities and routines, maybe even at work.
It's a little bit catch 22, to be honest cause I'm more or less dependent on glasses/contact lenses for working in the office. That means even if I did print pushing as Todd suggested I'd still had to find a way to incorporate it in my daily work day or even practising print pushing during work. Otherwise all my efforts seem to be doomed to fail since I'd destroy all my progress with the long computer hours.
Maybe I could try to place the computer further and further away and then switch to weaker prescription and start again.
It would be a somewhat similar approach that Ho from Vietnam (mentioned here before a couple of times) used with remarkable results.

Any suggestions or tipps for that ? Any other comments, ideas, thoughts ?

Thanks in advance and all the best !

Do you ever notice the “deer in the headlights” look is common in people with myopia? As if their glasses somehow freeze their eyes in place? And as if they can’t totally relax, and yet they can’t react appropriately to threats, either. They’re stuck somewhere in the middle.

Or does it sound familiar because that’s what you’re like yourself?

Either way, it isn’t your imagination. Here’s what’s going on.

What you’re seeing is a lingering “fight-or-flight” response. Your nervous system does the response automatically in response to a perceived threat. Your adrenal glands release hormones and your body leaps into action. That’s fine and dandy.

But it isn’t meant to continue for more than a moment. It inhibits actions in other parts of your body and brain so it can devote more resources towards making your muscles spring into action. It’s intense and isn’t sustainable. If this fight-or-flight response is brief and passes, you recover and go about your life normally.

What happens if it lingers, such that you’re not on maximum alert but you never totally come down from it either? Your body being constantly on medium-high-alert is exhausting.

One symptom, of course, is muscle tension. Muscles tend to contract in groups, so when some muscles of your face start to tense it isn’t hard to imagine your eye muscles tensing also. Your visual system is elegant and sensitive, and something like chronic tension can mess it up big time.

Part of the natural part of the fight-or-flight response is a widening of awareness, at the cost of resolution. In the moment it’s more important to identify an escape route or notice another attacker than it is to see the smallest details.

So some of the main components of the fight-or-flight response are:
  • A sense of panic
  • Extremely tense muscles
  • Wide but vague awareness
  • freezing or jerky movements
Bringing Yourself Back Down

Now that you understand the main components you can work on letting it go.

One thing athletes learn in weight training is that compound movements (where multiple joints are used in complex movements) are the most important. It helps your body work together as one strong unit that has functional strength that translates into real-world situations. The same principle applies to breaking habits and shifting yourself into a better way of being. You have to find a way to attack a bunch of issues at the same time with one tool.

As I’ve said many times, vision improvement is mental, and your mind is more powerful than you give it credit for.

As an example, let’s use this beach scene.

[Image: beach-e1439884614255.jpg]Look at the tip of one of the umbrellas. Imagine it is the center of your universe. Nothing else matters.

As soon as you’ve done that, move your gaze to whatever or whoever is under the umbrella, making it the new center of your universe. You aren’t concerned with anything besides that. It doesn’t matter whether you can see it well enough to identify what you’re looking at as a person’s head or a chair or whatever. The purpose is to let that one spot be the only spot you’re responsible for seeing.

At the same time, you are not responsible for how well you see each spot. You can’t “make” it clear by force.

You are merely allowing yourself to let go of all the other people and activity on the beach and be mesmerized by one spot at a time.

But don’t stay on a spot. Keep finding another one. After all, you do want to look around and see what there is to see. But you have to do it at the pace you are capable of, and later as you practice enough and start to understand this, you can take in more details per second.

Now tell yourself on each spot how it’s incredibly relaxing to give up having to see everything at once and only have to pay attention to one spot. Notice how it’s such a relief. Feel the muscles of your eyes and your entire body relax more and more on each spot. Remind yourself it’s perfectly safe to not look at everything at once, and that you will notice anything you need to.

Keep practicing this with everything you look at. The more you bring your awareness back down to normal by practicing this, the more you will move away from the stress response, and this new relaxed way of perceiving the world will become your new habit.

What happens when you try this? Share your experiences!]]>

My current understanding is that the eye bends the lens when it needs to focus on things up close and flattens it when it needs to see things farther away.

But how does lets say reading 3 point font from 2 feet away compare to reading 15 point font 2 feet away? Does the lens contract the same amount or does it flatten for the 5 point font?

TL: DR - Is seeing something small the same as seeing something far away?]]>

I have made some progress already after one week (my eyesight problem is very mild). I have gotten some practises and stuff to do from my teacher while he's going away. But the problem is that I don't understand how often I should "exercise". I pretty much know what to do (if you though have something you know that helps big difference between the eyes or strain, light sensivity or something along the lines, feel free to do it with me). I am planning to do them for a few minutes every half an hour or quarter, does that sound okay.
If someone can offer a free Skype call in April sometime and teach me what they do, I'd like that.
How old am I?
I'm under the age of 18. Really frustrating, since every lesson seems to be in need with a grown-up or costs a lot of money.
Anyone can tell me how much they practise, how often, how fast they're getting results and so on.
Thank you.

I have many prescription glasses that have colorful frames, but I have decided to not wear them anymore because of what I read on this website. The glasses that I want to wear in the future will just be regular glasses with no prescription in the lens, but possibly some SPF in the lenses (for sun protection), and a colored tint on the lens (I'm a fan of blue, orange, yellow tint, etc.).
